Open mic night

Monday saw the first open mic night of the year and what a turn out it was. Over 25 guys including the audience at the Livingston Howden Park Centre. I had promised myself this year i would do more of my own songs so I tried out one of the songs that I had been working on with the help of my self study.

did the draft of the song and i felt it worked out well. One of the sections i wanted to revisit after the performance was the phrasing of some of the verses. I think I'm putting a little too much detail in, so I'm going to rewrite these section to something simpler. Chris Stapleton the country writer said in an interview that the simperer the better, say what you want with the least amount of words you can. At least thats how i picked it up.

Once again there is a great importance in being prepared and having the material to fill the night. There are so many great players that attend the sessions and i love every month when I go here and meet with the guys. The good thing about the sessions is that so many of the guys say how it pushes them to learn more songs. It really is a good fun night.

Next month I'm going to do more of my own material as its a great opperntuity to test out new material then revisit it for the next time. Ive been working on a new album that id like to be able to perform on acoustic. I found that when i do my demos its better to get other players to record with me as it gives a slightly different feel. I think i just need to be clearer about what i want them to play to ensure I'm getting my ideas accurately recorded.
