Mapping out Ho Hey

3/6/2013

Mapping out a song for a client today, Its Ho Hey by the Lumineers. Its a great tune and I remember when i first heard it. I was going to the Coffee shop in NYC  Long Island and my cousin said have you heard this track when it came on the radio. He said it reminded him of Scotland. To this day I still don't know why.

The song is has a simple structure based in C Major, The singer uses a speech quality which is rhythmic and has plenty of room to breath as it is at a good pace.

I tend to use two pages of A4 when mapping out songs. The words are bigger and then there is plenty of room to mark in pencil where i need to remind myself of certain techniques i need to use.

The most challenging thing about this song is in the switch from first to second verse. Getting the balance from dynamics is important here. I find a little mix of twang with speech quality is serving the majority of the song. Using an accent to get the colour and tone is important in this song also.

I love this song as it brings great memories of driving to that coffee shop
