Looking at ways I can manage my data from the research. This s a massive task and something that needs to be taken seriously to ensure the project has been worthwhile.
There is different ways of approaching this:
Theoretical Approaches/Grounded Theory
Manage your data
Positivist approach reminder
Top down vs. bottom up thinking
The collection of information is basically in a heap just now and I need to systematically sort it into chunks. I’ve been keeping this blog and writing down my ideas, which has been a great reflection, and it has allowed me to critically think about what has been done. I learned the skill of sorting out or should I say knowing the difference between what is important and what is urgent so I have been naturally been able to reflect pretty quickly on the direction and keep things on track.
I’ve been told that I can use my blog as part of my dissertation however, I would really need to tidy everything up as when I write this it is as it comes out and it isn’t edited so to the person reading it might not make complete sense. This is an area I will take into consideration for use in the final article.
The blog has been great for daily reflection, moments of success and what action I should take.
In my reflective research I have been evaluating my ideas, asking questions about the process and this has helped me plan my programs and I have slowly but surely seen the success from it. An example of this would be when I had the meeting with one of the music co-ordinators who gave me direction on what the clients would like and then I was able to input this into the program and the next concert was an instant success. Simple but effective ways to better the experience and gather data on what the project is all about.
I would need to say im nervous about looking at the whole thing. Last night I tried setting out a basic plan to the dissertation and Im happy that I have headings but the approach to get the right information is the hard bit.
TOP DOWN APPROACH – Theory Hypothesis, observation to conclusion.
NATURALISTIC INQUIRY – A holistic approach for understanding to be reached. This approach is a little messy.
BOTTOM UP APPROACH – observation – pattern tentative hypothesis – theory.
GROUNDED THEORY – Philosophical assumptions – research methods – data collection, data analysis, written record.
The last theory is probably the most suitable. It gives a natural step process that I have been taking so far. There are no predefined theoretical explanations and my theory will appear from the data collected.
This theory doesn’t mean ignoring literature, it simply means that you should read about the project, you should do the observations and gather you information with constraint.
Part of the process is coding the data. It’s the process where from your research you come up with terms that almost tag the research, like a heading. The codes or terms will have different areas that you can fall into. These terms can be used again and again.
Get the data
Compare and contrast it
1. Initial coding
2. Focused coding category development
3. Axial/thematic coding
4. Theory emergence from categorising and themes
Its important that the path that is chosen that the data is read several times to extract the correct data. Highlighting key points and comparing one thing in terms of another.
